Imagine yourself in 2022, in a futuristic atmosphere … You are in the middle of the 4th Industrial Revolution! You live in a digital world of advanced robotics, autonomous transport, artificial intelligence, biotechnology and constant state-of-the-art technological creations. As such, leadership styles need to adapt to this new reality.
You’re at home in your old armchair and you’re thinking of moving to a better job … Grab your tablet, do a smart search, and quickly access a huge list of companies where you can work. You consider asking for information about the potential bosses in these companies, because for you a bad boss makes you want to quit job. So this time you decide, this is going to be the first criteria to choose your new job. You put yourself back in the armchair… and begin to reflect on leadership, the current successful leaders and those who have so far made their potential come true.
What a hard task! Which are the most important competencies for a leader? You’re thinking deeply…
Today leadership styles are changing quickly and if a leader doesn’t have good strategic and creative thinking he will probably end up working on a project that will end soon very quickly or he will not be able to solve some complex problems that will arise.
It is also important to analyse the accountability scores of the teams and leaders of each company. If they are high, it is worth applying, as they are the best indicator of success of the company. I’ve had several bosses who didn’t set the example in terms of responsibility and integrity and could not focus on the team to achieve the intended results. My colleagues were ultimately focused on their interests, engaged in victimization, did not manage the change constructively, and results did not appear. I do not want to repeat the experience...
Finally, I’ll look at leadership styles of leadership. Those who have the highest ratings of their collaborators in visionary, coaching, participatory and relational styles will be the best. Those who are directive, the pace-setting who lead only by example, will be the bosses to eliminate, for they no longer make sense in the current flat structures and in this robotic world, with no room for heart and soul. What I value in a leader is that he is very human, empathetic, motivates, develops, promotes cooperation and shares a meaning for work!
I’ll still see the emotional intelligence ratings of bosses, the basis for a leadership to have these leadership styles, and realize that the initial roster is getting much smaller. But I still find companies with interesting leaders to explore.
This reflection made me uneasy, I never imagined that there were so few true leaders … However, I see it as a challenge! I realize that I still have a lot to develop if I ever want to become a good leader. Being excellent in strategic thinking, creativity, accountability and still being empathetic and visionary seems to me very demanding. A little bit sad, I wonder if I can get there…
