What is the Importance of Virtual Communication?
The year 2020 saw an increase in the need to communicate with others within a virtual context. And in doing so, it also highlighted the issues that occur within this media.
Virtual communication shows itself to be more complex and challenging than expected. And even employees who vote for remote work, say they feel the disconnect that this way of communication brings - for instance: we can no longer have a quick jump to our colleagues' desk to ask a question, and are, therefore, limited to waiting for our colleague to see the email/telephone call/message. There are several lines of communication - from the normal email, the phone message, the numerous team management platforms, virtual meetings, etc - and as such, communication has stopped being a simple affair and now many and varied rules.
All of this complexity has brought a huge impact on numerous issues like productivity (A 2020 report from Nextiva showed that "33 percent of businesses lost a customer in 2020 due to a communications issue"); job satisfaction and security ("10% had colleagues quit their job due to communication issues"); decrease in company culture; misunderstandings due to lack of interpretation of clues of tone/body language; an increase of distractions; technological issues; and others.
As such, companies need to review their communication systems to prevail in the new world.
